How to Properly Burn a Candle

Getting the longest, cleanest burn from your wonderfully scented artisan candle is simple. Here are some basic tips for proper candle care and maintenance.

1. The first burn is the most important part of a candle's life. Wax has memory, so you must be sure to burn the candle until the entire surface has liquified edge to edge. If you don't, the candle will create a wax "tunnel" memory ring, and the candle will burn only within that limited area all the way down to the bottom. The rule of thumb is 1 hour per inch of the candle's diameter. For example, our 3" Himalayan candles will need approximately 3 hours for the first burn.

2. Always keep the wick trimmed to 1/4" before you light it. Use a household nail clipper to easily clip the wick. If the flame begins to flicker and smoke it can mean the wick is too long. Blow out the candle, let it cool to room temperature and clip the wick again.

3. Remember to be safe! Be sure to place your candle in a draft free, level area. Drafts or fans can cause a candle to burn faster. Don't ever leave a burning candle unattended. When the candle has burnt to within a 1/2" of the bottom, it is time to say a fond farewell. Burning below 1/2" can cause damage to the candle vessel and the surface it is sitting on.

4. Be sure to store your candle for any extended time in a dry, cool place away from heat or sunlight. A cozy cupboard or the box it came in will help preserve color and scent.

Love your candle and it will love you back!
